Artifact Description:
This Student Lab Safety Survey consists of a short quiz of questions regarding the rules of lab. It also has some interest survey questions that answer whether the student has any allergies, glasses, colorblindness, etc. It concludes by asking the student if they are comfortable or not as well as how they work best in lab. It was created using Google Forms. Google Forms is an easy tool to use that creates presentable forms or quizzes. It was easy to pick up and quick to complete. This survey fits into component 1B because it has questions that help the teacher learn more about the individual students. The students can express their strengths, weaknesses, worries, or any other thoughts they find important for the teacher to know. Through the student answering these questions, the survey links back to element 2 which is "knowledge of the learning process." The students are stating their best learning process and the teacher is able to learn this directly from the student.
Artifact Reflection:
If I were to recreate this survey, I would make it more for the overall class. This survey was meant to be focused just for lab. I would have included the lab questions, but would have also included a section about class and homework or class environment. I would also include more about the students' background in science and a little about their personalities in order to learn about the specific students as people as well as my students. The process of making the survey went really well because Google Forms is a very easy site to use and the forms look very presentable. It also seemed to not take too much work to make something look so presentable. In my future classroom, Google Forms could be used as a survey to learn about my students or to ask the students individually if they are comfortable or confident in the material after a unit is taught. Knowing the student is also important regarding Education Psychology because students are more responsive when they feel that the teacher cares. It is also important because teachers can then use their knowledge of Piaget and Vygotsky to understand which stage the student is in and which scaffolds to apply that will help all students be in their zone of proximal development (ZPD).
